Here's a visual of how communication works

Teaching freelancers how to get clients through cold pitching and the 100+ clients I've worked with as a freelancer showed me where the root issue was of 99% of our business issues.

I had an inside look that most people don't get into how businesses worked—and it showed me there was something bigger that needed to be fixed.

As much as helping freelance writers turn a $3k investment into $100,000+ was an incredible feeling, I felt like there was more I should be doing.

If I could help people communicate productively in business, then these freelancers could have the experience I was with my clients. I work with all of my clients long-term (I worked with one client for 4 straight years!).

How? By creating a productive work environment that literally had them saying, "Eva is our go-to writer."

They knew that I would:

  • Deliver projects exactly as they wanted them the first time
  • Deliver them on time
  • Communicate throughout the process with necessary updates and questions

It's my job to make my client's jobs easier, and that's what's landed me these long-term gigs as a freelancer.

If I had to distill which communication skills have helped me create a sustainable freelance writing career, here's what I'd say...

⭐️ Business Communication Tip

You can't build a house on mud.

It's all about building on solid land that can withstands the inevitable upcoming storms (because there WILL be storms!).

Communication works the same way.

You need the essentials, like the 3 Communication Checklists in Productive Business Communication. But you need to start with the foundation.

What even is productive communication?

It's a feedback loop.

At Point A, someone is making a request to a receiver.

At Point B, the receiver is delivering a task, deliverable, or project based on the request.

For example, let's say you're asking your content team to find a new SEO platform. You want your team to deliver a new SEO platform you can use so you can ask them another request, like building out the September editorial calendar.

The problem is that feedback loops break, Reader.

If the person asking for the request isn't clear about what they're looking for, the receiver sends the wrong deliverable and you can't get back to Point A. Now, your team is trying to find the "right" SEO platform because apparently the ones they sent over weren't what you were looking for.

You need to be clear about your request and your team needs to know how to ask the right questions to know exactly what you're looking for.

That's what brings you from Point A, to Point B, back to Point A productively and efficiently.

Everytime you're in a conversation, realize what missing information could cause the Communication Feedback Loop to break.

Remember, communication > talking
